From E-3 to O-10

3 posts in this topic

Our son Joe wants to be a "career Marine", meaning he wants to spend the rest of his life in the service, as opposed to serving for a couple of years, going on a couple tours of duty, then getting out with provisions from the GI Bill to start or continue college (like his peers are doing). He's currently an E-3, a lance corporal, and he wants to get to O-10 (general). Is he too ambitious for his own good? How rare is a "career Marine"?

It has happened before, but as I understand it, it is rare to go from enlisted to general. What is more likely is to become an officer and make LtCol. and plateau assuming he can get that high.

It's probably also super competitive and I'm sure there are things like politics and nepotism involved.  Not necessarily family nepotism but friend nepotism.  Only a select few can become generals, there can only be a certain number of them at any given point in history, probably less than 20.
